Hug Me, Kiss Me, Love Me

Hello All!
We hope that everyone has been having a good new year so far... It's been a fair while since our last post as the mad rush of Christmas and moving home took it's toll on the running of things here. We apologize for the neglect but it is safe to say everything is starting to fall back into place now, and so we thought we'd take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Valentines Day as it seems that January has just evaporated into thin air once again! It's Scary stuff how time flies but what can I say the Love bug has returned to brighten up our very cold February and welcome it we shall.
We've never been fans of designing things especially for commercial holidays (apologies if that sends negative humbug messages) but if you are stuck for a gift for your loved one this year & want something inexpensive but striking then why not send someone you love one of our animal letter cards, signed or from a secret admirer they add a personal touch to show you're thinking of them!
We also offer a straight to recipient service so you need not blush in person as we can write and send your message straight to their door! (Just email your message along with the orderinfo@sewsmitten.com)
Plus why not give someone one of our aptly themed Love Heart sweets Oyster or Passport holder which feature the sweets with many playful phrases; Kiss Me, I Love You, Be Mine, Dream Boy, You're Fab.....

Our SewSmitten Designer Feature for We Make London.

About the SewSmitten Team:

Hi I'm Penni P; the designer maker & head Honcho of the crafty website SewSmitten.com. I graduated from a Surface Design degree in June 2007 & from as early as I can remember I have always had a keen interest in the creative arts. Being practical is what I thrive at most, so whilst working part time as a studio assistant for other designer makers I decided to set up SewSmitten to make, sell & display my handmade wares.

Hello I'm Gnome; a freelance graphic designer, print & book maker, boyfriend & the second half to the SewSmitten team. I graduated from a degree in Book Arts & Crafts in June 2008, I have always loved drawing & I am an avid printmaker so I was very keen to get involved & contribute to SewSmiten & the creative side of things.

Our collection of goodies include handmade oyster cardholders, bags, purses, accessories, cards, prints & kitchen-wares all featuring original artwork designed & printed by our own crafting hands.

Inspirations:

We've always enjoyed working with different mediums so our inspirations stem from many sources & we are constantly looking out for new ideas. I especially have a fondness for the 50's, kitsch themes, bold imagery & antique machinery. But I'm always eager to learn new skills & create new things so you can be sure to expect unique & exciting designed products from our collections.

Best Sellers:

Our best seller by far has to be our Oyster Cardholders, which were actually the first thing I started making when I finished University. The idea came to me when I started to think about what useful products I could make, & the bonus of living in London meant that the birth of the oyster can almost guaranteed that everyone used one.

Since making them I have provided many a design.. starting off with the recycling of my old 80s comic collection which included such favs as Batman and My Little Pony, vintage sewing patterns, retro penny sweets and most popular of all London street maps. We also have made a fair few custom made cardholders too! (lookonline for more details)

This product has proved to be our best seller because we’ve provided many different designs over the years, they are fun, appealing, durable, useful, and also a great gift to give others.

We Make Christmas:

SewSmitten will be selling our full range of handmade goodies at this years We Make Christmas fair, it will be our debut at the event so we will be offering lots of fab favs as well as some new stuff too.

Among our handmade stash you’ll find; Oyster Cardholders, Passport Holders, Framed Coin Purses, Clutch Bags, Cards, Tea-towels, Aprons, Gift Sets and many more fun Accessories.

It was also recently our 1st birthday so in generous appreciation we will be offering lots of exclusive special offers and maybe some surprise treats too!

But if you can’t wait till then we are still running our amazing 2 for 1 offer online now on some of our stock so get shopping early to receive a great bargain!

Magnificent Maps

In true Bank Holiday Monday spirit we took a trip to the wonderful building that is the British Library yesterday to visit the must see Magnificent Maps exhibition they have showing there until the 19th September.
I was thoroughly taken aback over the massive scale of the maps on display and amazed at how much intricate detail they held, all in all the day left me feeling cultured and a little light headed from the shear concentration it took to peruse all the contents of each map.
I would definitely recommend a lengthy visit to this exhibition as it will take you a fair bit of time to look through them all but it is well worth it, plus it is free to go and see!
Some of my favorites of the day were the more decorative and lavishly painted maps with stunning colours which had sea lines that reminded me of wood carvings.

Fra Mauro World Map c. 1450

Also we did have some great fun trying to spot the eccentric sea monsters which feature in most of the earlier maps, now these were probably what the explorers thought they saw at the time when really they were probably just dolphins or whales!
Some of the later maps in the last rooms brought on big crowds, like 'The Island' (below) by Stephen Walter 2008 which expresses quite a comedic view of London by altering the names of places with regards to how he and the average Londoner lives everyday life.

The Island 2008

So if you have a spare morning or afternoon why not go and see this exhibition for yourself and marvel at 80 of the most impressive maps dating back from 200 AD up to the present day.
The gift shop is full of great treats too, but unfortunately for us I think we missed a SewSmitten opportunity there by not contacting them sooner as I think they would have loved to stock some of our London Map Oyster cardholders there too!

Luke produced these prints following a dissertation he wrote on the rise of mass production propaganda and public access to free media during the Russian Revolution. Taking historic images from mass produced war posters and teaming it with images he grew up with Luke has created a novel yet sophisticated and striking series of lino cut prints.

The weather even held off the rain too which was a welcome surprise to be greeted with some sunshine during the day.

One of my fondest memories as a child would be the trip to the news agents/sweet shop on the way home from school! Here you would be greeted with all kinds of sugared goodies all in a colourful row, and with empty tub in tow you would start to choose handfuls of assorted sweets which would only cost you between 1&2p! Oh no, there was no messing around with weighing, nope you had your pocket money in hand and would choose accordingly to how much you had to spend. Some of my favourite finds would be white mice, foam mushrooms, strawberry laces and fizzy cola bottles.

Ah those were the days......

So in cheerful reminiscence and because we simply love all things sugar coated, we here at SewSmitten HQ have created some colourful sweetie covered cardholders!

We spent a few days gorging ourselves on some of the classic Pick & Mix sweeties (Ooo isn't our job so hard!!) and have chosen 8 of our favourite to be turned into colourful cardholders.

So tell us which is your favourite sweet?

Here's a peak at just 4 of the 8 we have available online:

Of Cabbages & Kings Xmas Market

So last Saturday 12th December was our last craft fair before Christmas at the Of Cabbages & Kings Xmas Market in Stoke Newington and it was an amazing day had by all!

We had Carol singers at 12 'o' Clock which put everyone in a christmasy mood, plus Luke whipped us up a delicious rather large flask of mulled wine which was great to warm our toes up and keep us merry! We sold quite a few of our new range of kitchenware which was great, had a few familiar visitors, sold lots of card holders and also browsed the other great handcrafted goodies on sale.

For those of you that didn't quite make it down here's a few stall pics:
(but I really should start taking more photos of the rest of the events too! Next time!)

STALL AT BRIXTON CANCELLED!

Sorry for those of you planning to visit us this Saturday at The Rest is Noise, but the organisers of the event A Little Bazaar have just informed me that they have had to change the venue. Which is sad news as we were looking forward to holding a stall south of the river!

Screen-Printing-A-Rama!

Last week was a manic one! After a lot of running around; finding silk screens, ordering stock, preparing images, exposing and sourcing all the little necessities needed for our print production.. We successfully managed to set up a temporary printing studio in the living room of Gnome's flat!
.....And after four days of solid printing, lots of tea drinking (with the dunking of dark chocolate hobnobs of course!) and some minor hiccups along the way we now have a collection of stunning three colour silk screen printed tea towels and aprons.  Just in time to be launched at our xmas stalls starting in Brixton @ The Rest is Noise on Saturaday 28th November, so come and visit us and be the first to own one!
We only chose three out of the six in the series of these prints to be featured on the kitchenware but the original prints will also be up for grabs which are limited edition three colour reduction block Lino prints (A3 in size).

But coming soon to the site and at our stalls will be the full set of these prints on greeting cards:

Here's the Gnome in action!

Updates updates!

Hello to all!

I have been recently house bound due to a clumsy fall down the stairs on Tuesday, which only as of yesterday after a quite surprisingly quick trip to the A&E after an X-Ray I found out that I had actually did do some harm to my big toe.   Apparently I have managed to chip one of the bones, and that's why my foot is now double in size!
Not to worry though, I am trying to rest it up good and fast so that I can go back to making lots more new bags and accessory treats for christmas...
But now as I am currently out of sewing capability I have been trying to do some more updates to the site, and I have started to add some of my work to the penni p designs page, as well as work on more designs for our new products hopefully to be launched in time for christmas.
Fingers crossed I'll be on the mend soon to start the big print run for the new stuff next week, stay tuned!

Xmas craft dates!!

So its been really busy here at the Smitten HQ, I've been juggling lots of extra work with other designers and we've also been trying to work on lots of new stuff too.  We are actually working towards printing some of our own greeting cards and have made successful steps in the process by getting some silk screens and colourful yet festive envelopes! Look forward to some real treats coming your way!!! Which will include images of cult cinema teamed with WWII poster themed prints by our very own Luke aka 'Gnome' who is part of the SewSmitten team.

We also excitingly had our very first International order recently - All the way from Taiwan! So a big thanks to Sat Kaur for ordering with us and being the first to order a customised card holder too!

Still on the look out for crafty events to do in the run up to xmas, we did plan to do more events monthly but are saving ourselves for the xmas rush and have booked ourselves in for three craft events in the weekends following up to christmas, so make sure you come and visit and buy your gifts with us! Check out our craft events page for more details.

15 Minute Factory Pics and updates

Last Sunday we took part in the 15 Minute Factory art & craft event held at the Rag Factory off of Brick Lane. We were prepared for a busy day but were surprised to see a lack of people turn up! The general Brick Lane area is always heaving with people at the weekend as it hosts many markets- Upmarket, Backyard, Spitalfields plus this weekend was also the Curry Festival and the weather was great too...but sadly not many people came to check out the wide array of great handmade goods and art on offer (their loss!), so we were all quite disappointed about that.
Still it was a good experience and we got to show off our new bag shapes and stall display, plus meet new people too. One of which; Abi has kindly written a nice blog about our fun Oyster Card Holders! Check it out!

As soon as I have another spare moment I will be uploading the new handbag clutch shapes too so stay tuned!

Here are some pics:

15 minute factory

Since our last craft fair we at SewSmitten have been searching for more to do so we can get our products seen by you guys! Talking to many fellow crafters about what was happening where and when next we managed to find out about the 15 Minute Factory!  (check out their blog here)

Its a 3 day festival held in The Rag Factory found off of Brick Lane (click on the link for a map) the festival brings together new and cutting-edge acts from across all art forms, blurring the boundaries between performance, art and music.

We will be there on the Sunday 27th September from 1pm - 8pm so we hope to see some friendly faces!

Update of products including Customised Cardholders!

I've been a busy bee these last few days uploading more handmade products to the store which included lots of cute earrings, purses, retro card holders and a few handbags.  I am still in the constant making process and new products will be uploaded as and when I make them.

Also new to the shop is the option for customised card holders! So get your creative brain thinking and send us some images of what you'd like yours to have on! I must stress no copyright images please, as obviously we don't want people to sue! This is a new concept for us to do, so do bear with us as we are just road testing this idea to see how you guys like it and adjustments can be made along the way. We always welcome feedback though so feel free to comment on our guestbook or drop us an email at info@sewsmitten.com

There are a few pages still in construction on the site like a links page and previous design work I have done...and I aim to get them online soon..

Thanks to everyones support so far and hope you all have a lovely weekend! x

Preparation for Craftaholics...

So its all a bit crazy here at SewSmitten HQ as we have the Craftaholics craft fair this coming saturday.

I have been working like crazy making all the bags and bows and that, including a couple of new designs for little monster purses (you'll have to come to the fair too get a look as Iv only made a few!!!).
All the while Luke has been slugging away getting the website up and running as much as possible so you can read this fascinating blog.

We have also had to design, print and make up a whole new set of product tags for Craftaholics and finalise all my prices... more difficult than I had expected I can tell you!

So anyways I hope to see you lot on Saturday at The Old Queens Head on Essex Rd (Islington), just incase you don't know how to get there, you can find a map here.
